The market town of Totnes in Devon lies on the River Dart and was built on the top of a hill. It had about 8k residents at the last census in 2001. It has great rail links direct to Plymouth and London. There is also a tourist steam train that passes through the town operated by the South Devon Railway Trust. Totnes has a number of historical building and features such as Eastgate which is a large archway across the main street. The castle is another popular landmark as is the Leechwall which was thought to have medicinal properties in the water and still in operation today. Totnes is known for its new age residents and alternative community where you can happily enjoy a bohemian life style. There is a market twice a week offering antiques, old books, handmade clothes and organic produce. Totnes is twin towns with Vire in France, and named Vire Island after it. The coast resorts of Teignmouth and Paignton are within 25km of Totnes. Further inland is the town of Tavistock. Back in March 2007 Totnes introduced its own currency the Totnes Pound which you could use in some local shops. A detached property for sale in Totnes was just over ?300k in February 2008 and property in this area is above the UK national average. A small number of houses for sale where priced at over half a million pounds.
