Westward Ho! is a coastal resort in Devon. The town was named after the novel by Charles Kingsley and is the only recognised place to have an exclamation mark included in its title. Westward Ho! is a tourist spot with many holiday camps but over the years some of these have been demolished and made way for houses and apartments. There are still two camps remaining though. The town offers great surfing and has a long sandy beach which is kept clean. It is also home to the oldest golf course in England and Wales being the Royal North Devon Golf Club. Part of Westward Ho! is in the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Not long ago excavations revealed a submerged forest and shell middens near to the towns shoreline. Westward Ho! is twin towns with Buddenstedt in Germany and Mondeville in France. Further up the coast are the small sea side towns of Lynton and Lynmouth and further inland is Little Torrington. Property prices in Westward Ho! are above the national average and there was a few properties for sale at over half a million pounds in early 2008. At the same time a typical terraced house was worth around ?170k and a three bedroom house around ?225k.
