The Mendip town of Glastonbury has around 9100 residents and lies some 52 kilometers from the city of Bristol in Somerset. As with Frome, it became a Fairtrade Town in 2003. Glastonbury is steeped in history, myth and legend. Glastonbury Tor is a hill close to the town that strangely rises from the flat surroundings. Indeed it looks to me man-made but is a genuine feat of nature. Local myths abound and relate to everything from King Arthur to The Holy Grail. Legend has it that Glastonbury Abbey was built shortly after the death of Christ to house the Holy Grail. Further legends claim that Jesus visited Glastonbury as a child. These days it is a centre for pilgrimage and religious tourism. The now famous Glastonbury Festival is actually held Pilton, a nearby village.
