Ashbourne annually holds it’s two day Royal Shrovetide Football Match where one half on Ashbourne competes against the other. It is unique in the fact that the town acts as the pitch and the goal posts are three miles apart. There can be as may as several thousand players who will compete over the two day event and each day the game lasts for around eight hours. There are only two teams in the event being the Up’ards and the Down’ards ad this game has been played in Ashbourne according to legend for over 1000 years.
