On the River Teign is the large Devon town of Newton Abbot which had a population of 23.5k residents at the 2001 census.

The town was originally a market town and has been home to a local market for more than 750 years. There are a number of notable buildings in Newton Abbot such as Ye Old Cider Bar which is believed to be one of the last four cider houses in the UK. Located in East Street it has a rustic interior and you can only purchase cider, perry, wine and soft drinks.

Each year in September Newton Abbot celebrates its Cheese and Onion Fayre and Beer Wood festival which are part of the town’s heritage. There is a large racecourse and three country parks which attracts visitors to the area.

Near to the coast is Paignton which is about 12km from Newton Abbot and further inland is the borough of Totnes. The city of Plymouth is around 60km to the south east.
