The Devon town of Ottery St Mary is roughly 10 miles from the large city of Exeter and has the River Otter running through it. The population at the last census back in 2001 showed just over 7.5k residents in the town and parish.
Towards the sea is Newton Poppleford which is only about 7km away and carrying on towards the coast is Sidmouth which is about 12km from Ottery St Mary. 25km away inland is the larger town of Tiverton.
Guy Fawkes Night is a major celebration in the town of Ottery St Mary. Large barrels some as big as 30kg are soaked in tar, set alight and paraded throughout the town. There are seventeen pubs in the town and a barrel is lit outside each one of them. The barrels can only be carried by someone born in the town or who has lived there for a long time. This event dates back to the 17th century and believed to ward off evil spirits.
Another Ottery St Mary tradition is Pixie Day which is held each year in June. This event is in honour of the day that they banished all the pixies from the town to nearby caves which are now known as Pixie’s Parlour.
