The town of Wigan in Greater Manchester has the Leeds and Liverpool Canal running through it. The town had a population of just over 81k in the 2001 census.
Wigan is about six kilometers to the north of Ashton-in-Makerfield and thirty kilometers from Manchester city centre.
A famous tourist attraction on the canal is Wigan Pier that houses the "Trencherfield Mill Engine" the world’s largest and oldest original working mill steam engine. Wigan has had major changes over the years especially in the town centre. Part of these include re-development in the area around the pier known as the "Wigan Pier Quarter" which will include residential and office conversions. March 2007 saw the opening of the "Grand Arcade" which is a large shopping complex in the centre of the town. Further developments include "Tower Grand" which will house 150 new apartments and also retail and office space.
Wigan annually hosts the world’s pie eating championships and has one of the highest concentrations of bars, pubs and social clubs in the UK.
